Open Pakistan Education Network (OPEN)

History

  • Conceived in 2002.
  • Originally known as KOMAL (Knowledge Object MArkup Language) or SAMIR (Semantically Analyzed and Maintained Information Resource).
  • Undergone several iterations and revisions since conception.

Approach

Premise

  1. Not MOOC: OPEN Courses are not massive; they are based on the premise that learners go through the entire course content.
  2. Open Architecture: Based on an open architecture to support Urdu, English and a host of other languages.
  3. Lateral vs. Distributed Cognition: There are too many distractions for learners these days e.g. from Netflix, cell phones, etc. Most people don’t learn laterally; they learn by creating connections and off-loading.
